Tony ParkerWith Kobe's talk about the current USA Olympic team beating the 1992 Dream team starring Michael Joradan this week, Tony Parker's eye injury isn't making the same headlines.  However, ex hubby of Eva Longoria suffered a severely scratched cornea that required surgery after a brawl at a New York night club between the entourage of Chris Brown and Drake that is jeopardizing his participation at the London Olympics.  The cornea is a clear protective covering of the iris, the colored part of the eye.  If you get poked in the eye, dirt in the eye, or wear poorly fitting or dirty contact lenses, you can sustain a scratched cornea which can cause significant pain and discomfort.

The natural response to an eye irritant is to blink, which is helpful.  Rising the eye with clean water or saline solution is also advised.  You should avoid rubbing the eye as that could exacerbate the problem.

If you think something is caught in your eye, see an eye doctor as soon as possible, or go to the emergency room.  The eye doctor can examine the eye and use a special stain to better assess the surface of the eye.  If something is on the cornea, treatment can be appropriately started.  Treatment may include eye drops or ointment to prevent an infection.  Medicated eye drops can also reduce pain and inflammation and may be additionally prescribed.   Most of the patients in my Tucson Optometry Practice who sustain a corneal abrasion heal uneventfully from minor scratches in a few days.  More severe abrasions may take longer to heal.

Do not wear contacts until your eye has completely healed and your optometrist says it's safe to do so.  Wear sunglasses to help ease the glare of the sun and don't rub your eyes!  Most people fully recover from minor corneal abrasions with no permanent eye damage.  However, deeper scratches could result in long-term vision problems.

To learn more about common eye problems, get a copy of our free Got Eyes? book, or schedule an appointment today.  If you have an eye injury, or just need to update your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, contact Tucson Optometrist Dr. Zuraida Zainalabidin at Head to Toe Healthcare, PLCDr. Zie will explain your situation to you in clear detail and get you seeing clearly in no time.
